The walks this week are based on the Pillars of Hercules retail outlet, near Falkland, Fife.

The  High Level walk is from the car park, adjacent to the Pillars of  Hercules, to Craigmead and then on to West Lomond and return. 8.5 miles  with an ascent of 1500 feet.

The  Lower Level walk is from the Pillars of Hercules car park to Craigmead  and return. 4 miles and an ascent 0f 700 feet. An optional extension to  East Lomond is available. 2 miles with an ascent 0f 400 feet.

The walks commence at 10.00.

Wednesday 06/12 -

The walks this week are based on the village of Rait, Perthshire.

The  Higher Level walk commences from the village car park and goes via the  farms at Gasconhall, Shanry, Franklyden and Woodwell.  Around 8 miles with an  ascent of 1400 feet.

The  Lower Level walk starts from the reservoir to the west of Whitemyre and  follows the High Level route.  Around 6 miles with an ascent of 1100 feet.  The Lower Level walkers will be driven by Robin Graham and others to the start point.

The walks commence at 10:00.

Wednesday 29/11 -

The walks this week are based on the village of Elie, Fife.

Both walks pass Elie House, Broomlees and Kilconquhar Loch.

The Low Level turns left approaching West Muircambus Farm and Kincraig. 

The Longer walk goes towards Lower Largo before turning sharply back along the Fife Coastal Path and Kincraig.

Both walks go past the village of Earlsferry before returning to the start at Elie.

The Longer walk is 9 miles with an ascent of 500 feet.

Wednesday 22/11 -

The walks this week are based on Newport on Tay.

The walks commence at 10:00.

The  longer walk is from the Boat Braes Restaurant (the old ferry terminal) back towards the Road Bridge and along the Nature Trail, before crossing the A92.  The route then goes to Chesterhill and Washer Willy's  before entering Tayport.  Then along the Coastal Path through Scotscraig  and Inverdovat before returning to Newport.  Around 9.5 miles with an ascent of  600 feet.

The shorter walk  is up Shepherd's Brae and along the Nature Trail.  Then cross the A92,  pass Chesterhill, Washer Willy's and Scotscraig, before following the  Coastal Path back to Newport.   Around 6 miles with an ascent of 320 feet.

Wednesday 15/11 -

The walks this week are all on the Fife Coastal Path and will all terminate at Crail.

Walkers will have the choice of 3 lengths of walk - from St. Monans, 8 miles - from Pittenweem, 6 miles and from Anstruther, 4.5 miles.

Wednesday 08/11 -

The walks this week are the ones postponed from 01/11.  They are based on Quarrymill and Kinnoull, Perth.

The walks commence at 10:00.

The High Level walk starts from Quarrymill car park and crosses the road at Scone before ascending Kinnoull Hill.  The route passes Parkfield House before entering Scone again.  We then cross the park to Quarrymill car park.  Around 8.5 miles with an ascent of 1200  feet.

The Low Level route  starts at Quarrymill car park and travels via Scone to Balcraig and Two Mile House.  The route then goes via the local park and ride before turning sharp left towards The Scone Arms and Quarrymill car park.  Around 6 miles with an ascent of 700 feet.

With the forecasts suggesting persistent rain, the planned walks from Craigtoun Park were abandoned in favour of a coastal walk from Carnoustie seafront to Arbroath.


Wednesday 18/10 -

The walks this week are based on Wormit, just beyond the railway bridge.

The  longer walk is from Wormit to Birkhill House along the Fife Coastal Path and then the coastline, where lunch will be taken.  Retur  is via Balmerino and paths to Wormit.  Around 9 miles and an ascent of 850 feet.

The shorter walk is from Wormit to Balmerino and return.  Around 6 miles with an ascent of 600 feet.

Wednesday 11/10 - 

Due to torrential rain the previous weekend and strong winds on arrival at Pitlochry, it was decided on arrival at Pitlochry to substitute a walk up the full length of Loch Faskally via The Enchanted Forrest to Killiecrankie and return.


Wednesday 04/10 - 

The scheduled walks from Pitlochry were cancelled due forecasts of adverse weather.  Some of the group met for an impromptu walk from Camperdown Park, Dundee, through Templeton Woods and up to Clatto reservoir.

Wednesday 20/09 -

The walks this week commence from the farm of Afflochie, Angus.

The High Level walk will be from the farm via Trusta, Laidwinley, Hill of Garbet and Cruick Water. Around 8.5 miles with an ascent of 1650 feet.

The Low Level will be from the farm via Trusta and  Mowat's Seat. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 1250 feet.

Meet at 09:45. As there are no parking facilities near the farm, we need reduce the number of cars going to the farm by amalgamating walkers into as few cars as possible.

Wednesday 13/09 -

With several of the Group being away on a walking holiday, there will be a limited number of participants for this week’s walk.  Andy has agreed to take those wanting a walk, on a low level - all abilities walk, from Arbroath up the Letham Grange nature trail, with a loop round the dis-used golf courses, before returning to Arbroath.

The walk is virtually flat, and the Group should be back in Arbroath by around 13:30.

Views can be taken on the day, but for those not familiar with Arbroath and it's history, there will be time for a coffee before an optional visit to Arbroath Abbey.  Entrance is free to members of Historic Scotland, but there is an entry fee of £4 for non-members.

The Higher Walk is from the car park, via Hatton, The Glack and Deuchary Hill back to the car park. Around 9.3 miles with an ascent of 2000 feet. 

The Lower Walk is from the car park to Raor Lodge and return. Around 7 miles with an ascent of 750 feet.

The walks this week all terminate at Crail.

We will need to catch the number 95. 09:59 bus from Crail to the three starting points - Anstruther, Pittenweem and St Monans. The choice is yours. The coastal walks will pan out at 4, 6 and 8 miles respectively.

The walks this week are based on the parking spot for Clachnaben, Aberdeenshire.

The High Level walk is from the car park via Miller's Blog, Clachnaben, Hill of Endocher, Charr and the lower part of Netty Hill. Around 9.5 miles with an ascent of 2200 feet.

The Lower Walk is from Spittal Cott via Glen Dye, Charr and near  Glendye Lodge to the car park. Around 8 miles with an ascent of 1200 feet.

The car park for all walkers is 0.5 miles past Bridge of Dye.

The walks this week are based on Glenmoy, in the Angus Glens.

The High Level walk covers Hillside, Auld Darkney, Duthriss Hill, Balbui and Shank Hill. Around 9 miles and an ascent of 2400 feet.

The shorter walk is from Glenmoy via Glencuilt, Craigthran and the west Burn of Glenmoye. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 1050 feet.

Wednesday 09/08 -

John Wilkins -

Members of the Group will know that John, a long-time member of the Group and walk leader, passed away on 22 June 2023. A celebration of his life will be held in Selwood Funeral Directors Rooms 77-79 Dundee Street, Carnoustie on 09/08 at 14:00. To allow members of the Group to attend, if they wish, the walks planned for this week have been cancelled.

In there place, for those wishing to participate, there will be a short walk from the public car park at Auchmithie leaving at 09.00 hours. The walk is a low level standard and can vary from 5.5 to 8 miles, as people wish to do on the day.

Wednesday 02/08 -

Due to the forecasts showing likely heavy rain and very strong winds over Fife, the planned Fife Coastal Path walks were cancelled.

At short notice, we did an alternative walk, starting from Gilmerton and heading through the Crieff Hydro estate to Glen Turret Distillery for lunch, before heading for Crieff via Lady Mary's Walk.


Wednesday 26/07 –

The walks this week are based on the village of Kirkmichael.

The longer walk is from the village, heading south on the Cateran Trail, turning inwards at Dalvey to Pitcarmick Loch. Then heading back to Pitcarmick houses before retracing the Cateran back to the village. Around 9.5 miles with an ascent of 1225 feet.

The shorter walk is from the village heading north on the Cateran Trail before turning left at Dalreoch. The walk then goes through Kildrogan Wood, past the Eco houses back to the village. Around 8 miles with an ascent of 1200 feet. If the shorter walkers prefer, I can run them to Enochdu which will take two or three miles off the walk.

As the weather forecast has improved dramatically, the walks at Tarfside in Glen Esk will take place. 

The longer walk is from the village via Milton, Arsallary, Badalair and Auchronie returning to Tarfside. Around 8.5 miles with an ascent of 1350 feet. There is an option to ascend the Hill of Rowan.

The shorter walk is from the village via Baillies, and near Westbank returning to Tarfside. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 750 feet. There is an option to ascend to the monument on the Hill of Rowan.

The walks this week will be based on the Kirkmichael area.

The Higher Level walk will be from Kirkmichael to Spittal of Glenshee. Around 8.5 miles with an ascent 0f 1850 feet.

The Lower Level walk will be from Enochdu to Spittal Of Glenshee. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 1350 feet. 

The bus will call at Broughty Ferry Occidental 08.30, Reres Park 08.30, Balmossie Street 08.35, Monifieth TC 08.40, Barry Church 08.45, Carnoustie Health Centre 08.45, Carnoustie Church 08.50, Dalhousie Street/Guthrie Street 08.55, Recreation Ground 09.00. There will be no Dundee pick up. There will be a pick up at Coupar Angus at around 09.40 - 09.50

At Coupar Angus, turn right on the A94 towards Forfar. The car park is on the right at the first set of traffic lights.  

There will be NO CHARGE for the bus. Bring a £1 coin, which I will collect for the driver’s tip.


Wednesday 05/07 -

We are delighted to announce the walks this week will be by bus. This is the first time since the pandemic lockdowns, exacerbated by the shortage of coach drivers, we have been in a position to offer a coach based walk, so it is hoped as many current members and previous members as possible will come with us this week.

The walks will be based on Loch Leven.

The longer walk will be from Kinross Pier to Vane Farm. Around 8 miles with an ascent maximum of 250 feet.

The shorter walk will be from Wester Balgeddie to Vane Farm. Around 5.5 miles and an ascent of  100 feet.

The bus will pick up at the original locations and times - Broughty Ferry Occidental at 08.30 - Reres Park at 08.35 - Balmossie Street at 08.35 - Monifieth TC at 08.40 - Barry Church at 08.45 - Carnoustie Health Centre at 08.45 - Carnoustie Church at 08.50 - Dalhousie Street/Guthrie Street at 08.55 - Recreation Ground at 09.00 - Invergowrie at 09.30.

There will be NO CHARGE for the bus, however, please have a £1 coin ready, which will be given to the driver as a tip.

Refreshments will probably be at Vane Farm.

The walks this week are based on the church at Glen Prosen.

The High Level walk is from the church car park along the Minister's Path and turning right onwards Hill of Couternach, then turning towards Cairn Leith and Spott village. Around 8 miles with an ascent of 1500 feet.

The Low Level walk is from the Church to Elf Hillock, Coremachy, Drumwhern and return. Around 7 miles and an Ascent of 1150 feet.

The walks this week will be at the village of Tulliemet, with a previous rendezvous at Ballinluig Services.

The Higher Level walk will be circular from Tulliemet to Tulliemet House and Lochan Oisinneach. Around 8 miles with an ascent of 1250 feet.
The Lower Level walk will be from Tuliemet to Loch Broom and return. Around 7 miles with an ascent of 670 feet.

Wednesday 14/06 -

I have been sent an extract from the Courier over ther weekend that has declared traffic gloom and doom on the Tay Bridge. As a result, I have decided to move the intended walk from Fife Coastal to Sturdy Hill, Glenesk.

The High Level circular walk will be from Auchmull and will take in Maolearn, which is 7.5 miles and an ascent 0f 2000 feet.
The Low Level walk f\will be from Fettercairn to Edzell and will take in Cauldcots Farm, Burn Farm, The Neuk and Gannochy. Around 6.5 miles and an ascent of 400 feet.
Would persons intending to do the Low Level walk, please be at Edzell Car Park at 09.45. I will run them up to Fettercairn.
Owing to the limited parking near Auchmull, would you please meet at the Edzell Car Park just past the Panmure Arms Hotel - The same place as last week You will then be taken to the starting point at Auchmull.

The roadworks ogre struck for the 2nd time in two weeks preventing access to our planned walk in Glen Lethnot. Instead we headed for Edzell and had a nice (but chilly for June) walk taking in the Lang Stracht and the Blue Door walk at the Gannochy bridge.


Wednesday 31/05 -

The planned walk starting from Newton Bridge, Gilmerton had to be abandoned because on arrival, we found the A822 was closed for roadworks, preventing access to the starting point.

Instead, we decanted to McCrosty Park, Crieff and had an enjoyable circular walk round Crieff, via the Glenturret Distillery.

The walks this week are based on the village of Springfield, just south of Cupar.

The longer walk is from the car park by the village pub and takes in the footpaths round Crawford Priory, Cults Mill, Pitlessie, Gravel Pits, Sweethone and returns to the car park. Around 8.5 miles with an ascent of 250 feet.

The shorter walk takes the same route, but omits the Gravel Pits diversion.  Around 6 miles with an ascent of 200 feet.

We are taking this walk as the Tay Bridge will shortly be restricted owing to long term roadworks.

The walks this week are based on Blairgowrie and take in the Bluebell Woods. The longer walk is from the car park, near Cargills and goes via Ericht riverside, Lornty, parts of the Cateran Trail and White Loch, returning to the car park. Around 8 miles with an ascent of 750 feet.

The shorter walk takes in Ericht riverside, but returns to Blairgowrie without the Cateran Trail, then Muirton of Ardblair, White Loch and returning via streets to the car park. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 650  feet.

This week's walks are based on Gella Bridge car park on the A955 Glen Clova road.

The walks which will be lead by Robin Grant will take in Aud, Manywee, Craigthran and Gella farm. High and Low level walks will be offered as usual. This is part of the Glenmoy area.

The walks this week are in Little Glenshee, Perthshire.  

The high level walk is from the car park via Craig na Creache, Moin Folach, Obelisk for lunch, Drum Tick and Loch Tullybelton. Around 9 miles with an ascent of 1650 feet.
The low level follows the river up Little Glenshee . Around 7 miles with an ascent of 550 feet.

The walks this week are based on Glen Devon, Perth and Kinross.

The High Level walk is from the car park, along Glensherup Reservoir, Tarmangie Hill, and Bentie Knowe.  Around 10 miles with an ascent of just under 2000 feet.

The Lower Level walk is from the car park, along the reservoir towards Ben Shee. Follow the trail to Wester Glensherup and back to the reservoir and return to the car park. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 1300  feet.

Wednesday 19/04 –

The walk this week is Saturday's Courier walk around the perimeter of Forfar. I checked this out last Sunday and it is an excellent walk mixing traffic free roads, disused railway lines and Land Rover tracks. It pans out at around 9 miles. The walk is primarily a low level walk.

A shorter version is available, probably around the 7.5 mile range. 

The start of the walk is from the car park at the western end of Victoria Street, Forfar.

Wednesday 12/04 –

Due to the bus not being available and the forecast of heavy rain later in the day, the walk to Stonehaven planned for this week has been cancelled.

For those who feel quite deprived if they you do not get their regular walking fix each Wednesday, in place of the planned walk there will be a self drive/car share walk starting from the car park at the House of Dun, Montrose, starting from there at 09:00. There is a 4 kilometre woodland walk starting and finishing at the car park There is also a walk of similar length down to the bird hide at the edge of Montrose basin.

The parking meter at the car park is out of action, but there is a notice that NTS look for a donation of £3 to use the car park (and facilities). There are toilets in the courtyard and there is a cafe that can be accessed by non NTS members.

The plan is to do the woodland walk first, then maybe take refreshments in the cafe, at which time we can decide if we want to try the bird hide walk before the rain comes in. Therefore, this week there is no need to bring a picnic lunch.

The walks this week are based on the houses of Dowally, located just north of Dunkeld on the A9.
The longer walk will turn left at Roar Lodge and proceed to Loch Ordie, where a circular walk of the north side will take place. Around 8 miles with an ascent of 1100 feet.
The shorter walk will follow the same route but will stop on the south side of the loch. Around 6 miles with an ascent of 1000 feet.

The weather predictions for Scone are pretty poor, so keep an eye on your emails Tuesday, pm.

The longer walk will take in Corsiehill, Kinnoull Hill and Deuchny Wood. Around 8.5 miles and an ascent of 1200 feet.

The shorter walk will take in Scone, Murrayshall and Balgarvie. Around 6.5 miles and an ascent of 700 feet.

The walks this week are based on the Loch Ore Country Park, near Lochgelly.

The longer walk take in Benarty Hill and Harran Hill that are located adjacent to the park. The walk returns via the south end of the loch and back to the car park. Around 8.5 miles with an ascent of 1500 feet.

The shorter walk omits Benarty Hill and returns via the north end of the loch. Around 6.1 miles and an ascent of 400 feet.

The walks this week are based on the villages of St Monans and Pittenweem.
The longer walk is from St Monans along the coastal path to Anstruther Wester and then inland to Grangemuir, Balcaskie Estate and Abercrombie. Approximately 8 miles with an ascent of <500 feet.
The shorter walk is the same, but starting at Pittenweem. Those intending to do the shorter walk should report to Maggie McArthur at St Monans. Approximately 6.5 miles with similar ascent.

This week's walks are based on the village of Auchmithie, Angus.

The longer walk is from the car park via West Mains of Ethie to Red Head and Ethie Haven, returning via North Mains of Ethie. The distance is 9 miles, with an ascent of 1000 feet.

The shorter walk is from the car park via West Mains to Cuthile Harbour and the chapel for lunch, returning via Ethie Castle. The distance is 7.5 miles, again with similar ascent.

This week's walks are both based on the town of Kinross and take in a certain amount of Loch Leven on the Heritage Trail. The walks will commence (at 10:00) at the entrance to the Loch Leven Heritage Trail on the A911 road on the north side of the Loch. This is different to the normal start point of Kinross. Walkers will have a choice of walking towards either Kinross or Vane Farm, with mileage to suit.

Wednesday 15/02 -

Both walks this week are based on the Pillars of Hercules health shop and cafe on the A912 road, just west of Falkland.

The longer walk is from Pillars to West Lomond and return via Craigmead. Approximatelt 8 miles with a 1500 feet ascent. As this walk goes through a short tunnel, a small torch is advantageous.

The shorter walk is from Pillars around the Falkland Estate and incorporates Chancefield, Western Kilgour and Westfield. Approximately 6.25 miles with minimal ascent.

The longer walk is from Boarhills to Crail via the Fife Coastal Path. Approximately 9.5 miles with minimal ascent.

Wednesday 25/01 -

The walks this week are both in the Crieff area and take in the Glenturret Distillery.

The long walk starts from the village of Gilmerton and goes via the Knock of Crieff, Culcrieff and the Distillery before climbing Laggan Hill, concluding in MacRosty Park, Crieff. Approximately 8 miles with an ascent of 1300 feet. We will then walk back to the town centre and catch the bus to Gilmerton, following refreshments if time permits.

The short walk will be a circular walk, starting and finishing in MacRosty Park, following Lady Mary's Walk. Approximately 6 miles with an ascent of 600 feet.

Wednesday 18/01 - 

The weather forecasts are suggesting it will be unsafe to proceed with the walks planned for this week. 

However, in line with a new idea that whenever possible alternative low-level walks will be offered when the weather isn't conducive to going into the hills, the walks this week are based on Kinshaldy, Tentsmuir Forest.

The longer walk starts at the car park and follows the dunes through Reres Wood and returns to the road via the airport and the Coastal Path. The walk then crosses the road and proceeds to Fetterdale where we turn back via a dog leg to the car park. Approximately 9.25 miles with minimal ascent.
The shorter walk follows the same route but turns back to the car park via the forest tracks on reaching the approach road. Approximately 7.25 miles, again with minimal ascent.

Both walks commence at 10:00.

Wednesday 11/01 -

The walks this week will be based on Inverbervie.

The long walk goes across tracks to Mill of Benholm and Johnshaven, where we turn along the old railway track and head back to Inverbervie. Approximately 10 miles and an ascent of about 1100 feet.

The short walk will turn at Mill of Benholm and descend to the railway track, which they will follow back to Inverbervie. Approximately 6.5 miles and an ascent of 1000 feet.

Both walks commence at 10:00.

Wednesday 04/01 -

The walks had been planned to go through the Buddon Ranges to Monifieth. However, due to MOD activity, access to the ranges wasn't possible. Instead, the cycle track was taken to Monifieth, where seasonal refreshments were taken in The Vault in Monifieth.
